I hope you all have had a great start to 2016 and wish it turns out to be a great year for everyone.
This is one my first 4am designs! I have been having a few Sleepless in
Seattle Melbourne nights and when counting the yarn sheep doesn’t work, then I figured a hook and yarn might.
And it sure did. Well, not in making me fall back to sleep but coming up with this quick mandala pattern.
Any yarn and a one hook size bigger than the recommended size. (I have used an Aran weight (10ply) cotton yarn with a 6mm hook for the tutorial below.)
A darning Needle
A pair of scissors
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
ch-sp – chain space
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
Pattern & Tutorial
Make a slip knot. Ch 4 and sl st in the last chain from the hook to form a circle. Ch 2 (does not count as a st) and then make 16dcs in the circle. Join with a sl st to the top of the first dc. (Total – 16dcs)
Ch 4. Sk 1 dc, sc in the next dc. (ch3, sk 1 dc, sc in the next dc) 6 times. ch3 and sl st in the first ch of the first ch4. (8 ch3 sp, 8 sc)
Ch1 (does not count as a st). (5 sc in next ch3 sp) 8 times. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (40 sc made)
Make 1 hdc in each of the 40 scs from the previous round. Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc. (40 hdcs)
(The pic below shows how I made my first hdc in this round but feel free to make whichever way you are comfortable with. After closing the last round, I made an sc in the same st as the sl st. ch1 on top of that sc. This constitutes the first hdc. And then the rest 39 are made the normal way. To close this round, sl st in the ch1 made for first hdc. I have shown this in the 2nd pic below with the darning needle inserted in the ch1)
Make a standing dc (here is a good tutorial for it) in any of the hdc from the previous round. (Ch 3, sk 1 hdc, make 1 dc in the next hdc) 19 times. Ch3, join with a sl st to the top of the first dc made. (20 dc, 20 ch3 sp)
Ch1 (does not count as a st). (4 sc in the next ch3 sp) 20 times. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. (80 sc)
(Ch 4, sk 3 sc, sl st in the next sc) 19 times. Ch 4, join with a sl st under the first sl st made. (20 ch4 sp)
(1sc, 1hdc, 3dc, 1hdc, 1sc) in each ch4 sp. Join with a sl st to the top of the first sc. Cut yarn and weave in the ends. (20 petals)
And we are done!
Its fast and simple and looks good both in a single colour or multiple colours.
I hope you give this a go. The possibilities are endless and I would LOVE to see the different colour recipes you cook up. If you share your makes on Instagram, then please do tag them using the #prettypollymandala.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
